I was unaware that teaching mental math would give several of my students mental breakdowns.
I taught it by providing students with a hundreds chart and locating the larger number (of the two they were adding on the chart) So lets say we have 67+23. Put your finger on the 67 and then count by tens to add the next number. So add 20 to get 87 then add on your extra ones (3) to get to 90!

Some of my kids just don't get this. Others thought it was a joke. Very frustrating.. grrrr
