What teachers really want to tell parents

new teachers remain in our profession an average of just 4.5 years

So does that mean I'm ready for retirement already?! Wooo Hoo! Victory dance. Yea right. I think I'll beat the odds.
If you haven't seen this article on CNN I urge you to read it RIGHT AWAY! It truly explains what many of us deal with on a daily basis that isn't fair. My favorite part is when they talk about arguing with your doctor. You wouldn't do that so why argue with us. We do see children in a different light. We see them not as babies but as busy working bees! (hopefully)What are your thoughts?

Geometry Line Find Recording Sheet Freebie

Alright, so after 8+ inches of snow last Wednesday we had 2 snow days last week people! I'm going crazy. I'm itching to get back to work and see my kiddos. In the past 9 days I have only worked 2 days, my self-worth is going down the drain. I miss my job. I'm ready to feel productive again. In order to do so I'm spending the afternoon in the computer lab doing homework for my master's class.

We turned this little guy...

Into this:

Last week..Wednesday--We learned about lines and we created some using yarn...lines don't really get too exciting now do they? So today I'm trying to make it a bit more mind stimulating by doing a line find. I'm going to take my students on a silent extremely quiet school tour and we are going to walk around and visit different areas then draw the lines we find. I think this will be challenging but then again pretty easy once they get the hang of it--the whole silent thing may be the hardest part. Here is the worksheet we will be using! Enjoy!

You may download this little recording sheet HERE
One of my students turned this paper into me last week.. umm really? Is this a joke...where is the rest of your assignment mister? It made me laugh. You could tell he was kind of nervous about turning it in.
Besides all the snow I had a great weekend reuniting with friends for a wedding shower. I love wedding season!

Cross your fingers for me NO MORE SNOW DAYS! I want my summer vacation Mother Nature:) However it would be nice to find some extra time to finish my Donor's Choose project! Stay tuned for details. They are calling for more snow tomorrow:( XOXO

I made my kids Valentine's Day hearts! I was so happy with how they turned out--besides the fact that my molds melted to my oven.. whoops who knew they were ice molds?? I didn't remember reading that on the package:) They turned out super cute though and surprisingly third graders aren't too cool for heart crayons!

3D Shapes- Vertices, Faces & Edges/ Simon Says Geometry Game

Last week we finished up recognizing vertices, faces, and edges with a math notebook entry!

Worksheet Here
Then We started our modified versions of these:

Almost done!
Plus we squeezed in a few minutes to play this game! We numbered each box 1,2,3,4 and then rolled a dice. If we rolled 5 & 6 we just rolled again.
Then we finished up by learning how to play Simon Says Geometry Terms with Betsy! She is so wonderful.
Hope everyone has a great week. I got back from Texas last night pretty late. My flight was a bit delayed which is always a big bummer. My boyfriend broke his finger yesterday too and we spent the whole afternoon at the ER. I hate leaving him down there but I'm glad to be back with my kiddies. Not glad to be back with this nasty cold weather. Hope everyone enjoys their (four day) week! I know I will... as soon as I get my homework done.

Polygon Math Notebook Entry!

We have been working very had in math the past two days introducing polygons and 2D shapes! I found this amazing idea from
Confessions of a Teaching Junkie
and had to jump on it quick! We modified her version to fit our needs and came up with these lovelies:

You will need this little power point to help you teach! It is wonderful.
I also bought this unit-which did not disappoint!

Well I'm off to the copy room. Story of our lives I suppose?? Valentine's Day party tomorrow and Thursday since I'll be gone I printed everything on PINK paper for my sub! I hope she appreciates that as much as I do:)

Teaching the Water Cycle

When are FINALLY finishing up our lovely water cycle unit and I'm so ready! Our wonderful third grade student teacher (in another room) came up with this great paper project to give our kids a better understanding of the project. Keep reading for a play by play!
Here was her way neater than mine example!
Day 1: We added a sun, liquid water, and land.
Day 2: We added our clouds and our mountains to show where rain comes and how it runs off objects and goes into lakes, rivers, and steams.
Day 3: We added our labels, rain, red arrows, trees, and snow.
After we finished this we wrote paragraphs to explain to someone else what the process of the water cycle was. They turned out so lovely. I was very impressed and it truly showed who understood and who was just flying by some hairs. In order to do the paragraph I gave them the words we used and we came up with a topic sentence together. Then we decided to start by explaining that it has no end or beginning. We then went into explaining evaporation. Hope you like it!
I'm super excited for Valentine's Day! I'm making my melted heart crayons this weekend! I wanted to do it last year but never found the molds. When I was in Kansas City a few weeks ago they had them at Target again. Woo hoo! I was one happy teacher. I can't believe it is even Valentine's Day. This school year is going by so fast it amazes me. There are so many things I want to accomplish and I hope I can at least touch base with some of them. Yesterday the Librarian told me you can't change the world and it was good to hear that. Sometimes I know I get so caught up in trying to fix everything and make everything right and it really isn't possible. So today I'm slowing down again and just trying to change my little world first.
Next week I have a 3 day work week. We have Friday and the following Monday off so I'm taking off Thursday (half day) and flying to Dallas Wednesday night to visit the boyfriend again. He comes back to Missouri at the end of March. I miss him dearly and can't wait for his arrival. I also love going to Texas more than anything!!! I feel like a little bit of a Texan at heart. I've spent a lot of time there in the past few years. If you ever find yourself North of Dallas in McKinney eat at Cadallic Pizza Pub. It is amazing. Have a great Wednesday! I'll be so happy in May of 2014 when I graduate with my Masters. I will fill like I can devote time to writing again. I feel guilty blogging when I have papers to write. Love ya!
